ARE YOU A CANDIDATE ?
A typical candidate may be relatively early in recovery, just out of detox or treatment, living in challenging, temporary circumstances and/or unemployed with poor prospects. In addition, because of the mental and physical damage done by living a life of drug and alcohol abuse, the candidates may not be fully employable. They typically need a transition period of continuous sobriety combined with useful work to give them a launch toward a self-sustaining and sober lifestyle.
These candidates are referred by local social service agencies, such as detox centres or welfare offices. We also obtain referrals through 12-step groups or word of mouth throughout the recovery community.
WHAT WE OFFER
We offer the prospective client is simple and straightforward program.
On day One the candidate receives transportation to the job site (usually our Charity Used Clothing facilities), a meal or meal allowance, then pocket money or hourly wages depending on his/her ability to perform. At day’s end a mutual assessment is made and, if all goes well, the candidate is given a list of 12 Step Meetings to attend, transportation or money for transportation, and is invited to return.
The days that follow are similar to the first, but if the candidates want to continue, they must be willing to accept a more structured environment. This structure includes monitored attendance at community 12 Step Meetings, and mandatory participation in the in-house meetings held at Steps Place that are run by peer counselors in life skills and coping strategies. Each candidate will be assessed as to what meetings are felt to be of most benefit to him.
In addition, the experienced staff members at Steps ensure that the work environment is conducive to recovery in terms of daily conversation, feedback, and general support. Every step is taken in complete consultation with the candidate so he knows exactly where he stands at all times.
The preceding is the basic structure for approximately 90 days, or one season of the year. Successful candidates will, at minimum, be healthier, and more clear and confident about their future after the ninety days. Furthermore, they will have acquired the dignity that comes with showing up consistently, doing paid work and being rewarded for it, and most importantly, they will be another three months down the Path to Permanent Sobriety.
It is at approximately the 90-day point that another payoff occurs, as part of Steps’ Mandate to help the recovering alcoholic or drug addict.
It is at the three-month point where the journey at Steps is almost complete, that something may be done to facilitate the candidates’ future progress. It may be a driving license or some other type of license required for employment, a training course which would lead to a better job, support in finding better accommodation or work, or even support in establishing a career. Any of these things areconsidered as possible options for the right candidate.
